Not only is it December, it's the 10th of December. Where has the time gone?!
I was catching up on blogs while listening to tonight's debate and eventually realized that I had not yet visited Miss Kylie's blog since her annual Christmas contest started. And here I had made a vow to myself that I was going to play every day to win the donation for Northern Virginia Sheltie Rescue where I found Trudy--and I've already missed 9 days of Christmas. I'm going to have to set a reminder on my memory...er, cell phone.
It hasn't really felt like December until the last couple of days. Thursday it was in the 70s, just down to 50s at night. Today I was bundling in layers during our walks, and at 11:30 PM it's now 36 here in southeastern Virginia. To think that I loved playing in the snow as I grew up in Indiana. I think that trait must die off once your own kids are teenagers. These days, I'm in at least 3 layers (long-sleeved shirt, sweatshirt, and coat, and gloves) before Trudy & I are out the door. A real weather wuss.
Yep, I'm definitely ready for spring.
One woman, 1 sheltie, 3 sons, 2 daughters-in-law, 1 granddaughter, a great friend and other family members who might turn up. Most of the time the focus is on my Sheltie, Trudy, my family here and abroad, and tidbits of daily life

The Day After
The best part of the day after Thanksgiving really isn't the deals you find at the malls and outlets. It's the leftovers in your own fridge! (And Trudy & Jared agree!)
I hope everyone had a wonderful day with family and friends yesterday. Do you also have today off, as well, to relax with family, watch all the football you want to see, or compete with thousands of other people for that gift that will just right for someone on your list? Or could it be something you want for yourself, at a good price? Well, go for it!
Shop wisely. Spend carefully. Interact with other shoppers (and drivers!) kindly. And have alternative options, in case the item you REALLY wanted to buy is sold out.
Let the "games" begin!
Cheri (Trudy will stay at home--large crowds are too stressful for her.)

We've got to get busy here!
So I'm looking at our blog for the first time in a very long time. Our last post was close to 4 months ago! Sheesh! I have my list of favorite blogs that I check almost every time I'm online and, except for a few, there's almost always something new. I need to step it up. There's really no excuse for this.
But there are some of the other blogs that aren't updated either...I'm worried about them. I don't think I've seen them posting one other peoples' blogs either. I'm thinking especially of Josh & Jessie in New Zealand and Ludo's gal Morgan in Pittsburgh. I'm not trying to be nosy, but after reading their posts, you begin to feel a link to the people behind them, and you worry about them when they're not around, and hope they and their families are OK. We're keeping fingers and paws crossed that they are.
Cheri & Trudy, back again, and determined to stay in touch.

How we' ve spent our summer (so far)
Doin' practically nothin'.
Trudy here again. Dawn had asked what >I've< been up to (me, not Mom!), and I wrote an answer and I previewed it and thought it was a perfectly good answer and when I went back to post it, it had disappeared. Mom told me that I didn't log in, so nothing was saved. Grrr. So now we're logged in and I'm just going to dictate. Mom's better at the typing than I am...drat!
The really bad hot weather just got to us on the East Coast in the past 3-4 days, so now we're only going outside when it's absolutely necessary, like for walks. Wonder of wonders, Mom's even getting up a little earlier than usual for our morning walk, but she says it's already in the 80s by then. For the past few days, I haven't even been trotting along like I normally do when we walk, just doing 1 step at a time and panting like an old dog...and I'm only 8! And it's even worse when we have to go out when she gets home in the evening. She'll take me out for a quick pee-mail check then, and once the sun is about ready to go down, we'll do another, slightly longer walk. Still hot though.
Then, on top of everything else this morning (heat, walking, panting, etc.) after she gave me breakfast she put my leash back on and just sat on the couch, holding onto the leash...and THEN she brought out the brush and comb from the side of the couch and started brushing me. Mumbling something about too much shedding. FOR 30 MINUTES! I mean, it sorta felt good, but she was turning me this way and that, brushing 1 direction than another, making me lie down and going for my tummy. I thought it would never stop! She filled up almost an entire plastic grocery bag with MY hair!
She used to give me treats when she did all this, but this time I just had to stand there and take it. That's just not fair. I mean, I should get something out of this besides a "Good girl, Trudy!"
Right?

Today is my Gotcha Day!
Trudy here: Today is the 3rd anniversary of the day I came home to live with my Mom and her son. I had dictated a whole long description of Mom's quest to adopt a dog before she found me, and I went to another page to look something up and when I came back it was all gone! Now, some bodies might say that I shoulda saved it. But that was my problem!! It was automagically saving itself every 20 seconds! Mom told me to move over, she'd try to find a way to lengthen the time between saves. Didn't find anything and when she brought me back to this screen the page had disappeared. Grrrrrr!
Anyway. Mom got me on June 1st, 2008, and I've been so happy here with her, as opposed to the family with the young, screaming child that was my original family. Funny, though. Since I've been with Mom, I haven't been afraid of kids. Mom thinks it's because she's running interference for me whenever we meet kids, telling them how to be gentle with me when the meet me, and not automatically try to pat me on the head.
Mom is concerned that I don't play very much with all the toys she's bought me. I don't know why I don't. Nothing much in the toy box catches my attention. My ball is good to kick around for about 30 seconds. I like to chew on a knotted rope made for dogs, and that can last a minute or two. One game we play is that Mom will put me in a sit in the hallway, and then hide a treat or two, then tell me to find it. She usually puts something in the toy box, but I always find it!
The picture below is of me a few days before Mom came to pick me up from my foster mom's house. Before Mom found me on the NVSR website, she swore she didn't want a blue merle because the blue eyes creeped her out! Silly Mom! Didn't seem to be problem for her once she saw me! BOL!

I am soooo happy in the home I have now! The only screaming children are the ones that belong to the neighbors, and they're not in my house chasing me around! Mom tells me I actually am reacting pretty well to the children in the neighborhood who come up to me calmly and let me sniff them before they reach out to touch me. It's even fun to be petted. And I get to meet a lot of dogs in my neighborhood. I didn't get much of a chance for that before, or at least not that I remember.
The day Mom came to meet me, I was in the same room, but hid under the coffee table until she started offering me treats. I'd take one or two, then got back under the table. After a while she had to use the bathroom. When she returned her friend Cindy and Susan, my foster mom, told her that I had come out from under the table and laid down on the rug outside the bathroom, at least until the door started to open again. For Mom that was the sign that I wanted her, too.
The big picture below is just after we got to my new home! Mom's friend and her son and her and I, all together! It was a little overwhelming, but it was fun too! Can't you tell by the grin on my face??
I have a mom who watches out for me now, and who protects me from what I'm really afraid of, and also challenges me to try new things. I'm not so shy any more, and actually choose to go up to some children when we're out walking. My human brother is gruff a lot of the time, but I can tell he really likes me.
I think life is a whole lot better than it was three years ago, when the only family I'd known had to get rid of me because their child scared me. I'm in much better home now, and love my family. And that's my Gotcha story!
